MERLYN Shower Mindfulness

The simple act of showering can be the perfect time to practice this. Showering is a wonderful opportunity to engage mindfulness while also caring for ourselves at the same time. Here’s how…

MERLYN Shower Mindfulness

One of the reasons we should practice mindfulness is to stay in the present moment. There is research that concludes that when our minds wander, we’re more likely to be unhappy.

“A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind.”  (Psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert of Harvard University)

It’s estimated our minds wander, on average, 46.9 percent of waking hours. This mind wandering can make us unhappy. Feelings of happiness have much more to do with where our minds are than what we are doing.

To prevent the negative mind-wandering we can try to stay focused in the present moment. Try minimizing the many random thoughts that float into our minds. How many times have you read a page from a book, realizing you have no idea what you just read because your mind was wandering? The simple act of showering can be the perfect time to practice this. Showering is a wonderful opportunity to engage mindfulness while also caring for ourselves at the same time. Here’s how…

Preparation is Key

Before a shower remove all the electronic devices from sight. Escape the distractions. Lay out a fluffy towel or robe, light some candles if you have the time and prepare your mind to relax. Be mindful of the cleansing properties a shower will bring.

Wake up the Senses

As the water flows, be aware of the water flowing over your skin. Feel the stresses wash away. Listen to the flow of the water and smell the scents of the shampoo or the body wash. Watch the water swirl down the plughole and with it all the negative thoughts.

And Breathe…

Take a moment to just breathe and just be. Close your eyes and let the water gently run over your skin. Imagine all the thoughts and worries pass out of your mind like the water swirling down the drain.

Be Thankful

Be thankful for a hot shower. Be thankful for being in this moment. Be thankful for being you.

Mindfully Finish

When you are done, carefully dry yourself patting the skin softly. Treat your skin with a nice moisturising cream. Make sure the bathroom is tidy, so it is ready for your next mindful shower.

Taking a few moments in the shower can make a big difference to your well being. It doesn’t have to take a long time to take these steps, you can go at whatever pace your schedule allows. Be mindful and showers will never be the same again.
