Why taking a cold shower can lift your mood

Did you know there are a number of health benefits associated with taking a cold shower?

For most people, showering is just a part of the morning routine. But what if we told you that taking a shower is more than just a great way to start the day?

Sadly, in 2016 18.5% of the Irish population were recorded as living with a mental health disorder (irishtimes.com), while according to Mind, 1 in 4 people in the UK suffer with their mental health. We’re committed to doing our bit to help people overcome this fast-growing issue.

So, with that in mind, here are a few ways in which taking a cold shower can help your wellbeing.

1. Cold showers make us more resilient to stress
With almost three quarters of adults (74%) in the UK alone (mentalhealth.org.uk) reporting to have felt overwhelmed or unable to cope, the need to destress after a hectic day has never been greater. Taking a cold shower with a temperature of less than 20 degrees or less is believed to allow our bodies to become more resistant to the stresses of we face daily, therefore reducing stress levels in the long run.

2. Cold showers Increase our endorphins

Taking the plunge into a cold shower is also a great way to help relieve stress for those who suffer from depression. When you take a cold shower, you are sending several electrical impulses to your brain. This then creates an electric shock type effect in order to increase alertness, clarity and energy levels. In the process Endorphins (happiness hormones) are released which have a positive impact on fighting the effects of depression.

3. Cold showers help to improve metabolism

Did you know that by taking a cold shower 2 or 3 times per can help contribute to increasing your metabolism, and may also help fight obesity over time? This is due to the brown fats which play an important role in adult health being activated by exposure to cold temperatures. While white fats are more commonly associated to the likes of obesity and heart disease, health levels of brown fats are an indication that white fat will also be at a healthy level.

4. Cold showers help to fight common illnesses

If you often find yourself suffering from common illnesses such as colds and flu, you may find taking regular cold showers helps to fight these bugs. Our bodies are designed to resilient to the elements we are exposed to on a daily basis. By shocking our bodies with cold water, we are stimulating leukocytes which help fight infection in our bodies.

If you are preparing for surgery that could lead to decreased immunity, this is a helpful way to prepare for the operation.
